Faced with the sudden failure of our ageing studio screen system — critical to 7.5 hours of live output every weekday across Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women — I saw an opportunity to innovate in-house. Rather than turning to traditional vendors, we developed a bespoke, real-time graphics system using TouchDesigner. What began as a proof of concept quickly evolved into a full production pipeline, delivering live data, layered animation, and custom control across all studio displays using off-the-shelf hardware.
I led the concept, pitch, business case, design, development and rollout — working closely with John Barling (Head of Technology) Paul Gilbert (Projects Lead for Technology) and Jacob Morris (Vision Mixer for Good Morning Britain). The result is a flexible, resilient system now fully trusted by our vision mixing team, featuring direct TCP/IP triggering, a live GUI for on-the-fly adjustments, and complete independence from third-party support. First used in anger during a snap election broadcast, the system now drives everything from generic backdrops and dynamic content to live performance visuals.
Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning, Loose Women, Martin Lewis Money Show Live, The Oscars Live have since come onboard and Chris Douch Graphic Designer has learned the system and is now taking it to new creative heights.
This designer-led, TouchDesigner-powered solution hasn’t just restored our creative edge — it’s given us a future-facing platform that grows with our ambition. I’m also proud that Chris Douch, a designer on my team, was inspired to learn TouchDesigner and became actively involved in the project. He played a key role in the later rollouts across This Morning, Lorraine, and Loose Women.
